The Sixth One - Roseland Ballroom (4 November, 1988)

The Sixth One - Roseland Ballroom (4 November, 1988)

The show at the Beacon Theatre had been the finale of the Strange Behaviour Tour. I wouldn’t see Duran Duran again until 1988, when they were touring to promote ‘Big Thing’. Sometime in the spring of 1988, Eileen and I began another one of our periods of not talking to each other. It was all my fault this time, and I was stubborn. Looking back at it now, I don’t know why I didn’t just call her and apologize. But, I didn’t. I am really good at being stubborn, and because of that we wouldn’t see, or talk to each other for several years.

During the summer of 1988, I had gotten a new Boyfriend. As much as I wanted to feel like I really cared about this guy, I did not. He really was just someone for me to be with so that I wouldn’t have to be alone. My life had changed so much between 1987 and 1988, and I found myself just trying to keep up. I was no longer going to F.I.T. and I had come back to live at home, and go to a local community college. I was working, and going to school and I really missed being in New York City. I was also missing Eileen, and I was missing my ex- Boyfriend. In the middle of this emotional mess, came the announcement that Duran Duran was going to be playing a series of shows at small venues throughout thee U.S. There were only about 6 dates on the ‘Secret Caravan’ tour, and the last one of them was going to be at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City.

Now that I was on Long Island, I had to find another place to get tickets. There was a Ticketmaster outlet on Larkfield Road in East Northport. I forget what kind of store it was (I think maybe it was a hardware store) but they had Ticketmaster there, and they also used a lottery system. About a week before the tickets went on sale, you had to go to the store and get a bracelet. This bracelet had a number on it, and on the day of the sale, the person with the lowest number would go in first. I picked up my bracelet, and waited.
General Admission AND 15 bucks. THOSE were the days!!
When I arrived at the store on the day of the sale there were about 25 other people waiting. At first I was worried, but then I learned that some other tickets for some other show were also going on sale that day. Of the 25 people waiting outside, only 7 of them were there for Duran Duran tickets. Of those 7, my number was the lowest. Once again, the show had sold out in record time, and I was so glad that I was lucky enough to get tickets.

Now, the New Boyfriend liked Duran Duran enough to ask if he could go to the concert with me. I figured what the hell, I had never taken a boyfriend with me to see Duran Duran and it was nice that he liked them enough that he was even interested in going.  He was going to school in Upstate New York at the time, so he was going to take the bus down from New Paltz and meet me on line at the Roseland Ballroom.

The concert at Roseland was general admission, and I got to Roseland at around 10:00 am. There were only about 12 other people on line at that time. We had a nice time hanging out together. Around 4:00 pm the New Boyfriend showed up. He had suitcase with him.
“What the hell? I hope they let you in with that”
“It has all my stuff that I need for the weekend”
This Boyfriend had a habit of whining, and all my memories of him are of him talking in that voice.
“Oh God, don’t whine about it. But I’m telling you, if they don’t let you in because of it, I’m going in anyway”
The New Boyfriend rolled his eyes at me and continued whining,
“Really, you would actually leave me here….outside?”
I didn’t even think about it.
“Yes. Yes I would”

Around 4:30 a bunch of people started arriving, and they were going into Roseland. One of the girls on line in front of us grabbed a Security guard.
“What the Fuck, who are those people?”
“They are participants in the New York City Marathon. They are having a special dinner for them tonight”
“When are they leaving?”
“They have to leave by 7:30, or else we’re gonna charge them $1,000.00 per half hour extra they stay over”
I started cracking up at that point.
(As I sit here typing this, I think I recall that the New Boyfriend had brought some pot with him. I remember smoking a joint while we were on line. This explains why I remember this conversation being so funny)
Sure enough, around 7:30 all the people started coming out of Roseland. I don’t remember what time they let us in, but I remember that Security was not too happy about the New Boyfriend’s damn suitcase.
“You can’t bring that in here”
I slapped him on the back and said,
“See you later, ______”
The New Boyfriend tried to give me the big, brown eyes, but like I said (In ‘the Fifth One’) I am immune.
“There’s nothing in here, but clothes and stuff”
and he popped it open.
“It’s a good thing we smoked the pot already”
The Security Guard looked at me
“What was that?”
I gave him my most innocent face.
“Oh, nothing”
The Security Guard smiled at me, and finished rummaging through the suitcase
“Ok, it’s all right. Have a good time”
I grabbed the New Boyfriend’s hand, and dragged him toward the stage,
“COME ON! we’ve wasted enough time already”
The New Boyfriend tried to pull me towards the coat check room.
“I have to check this!”
And he pointed to his suit case.
“Go right ahead, but I am running for the stage, I have to be in front”
In his whiny voice, he replied,
“Oh…Okay”
I let go of his hand, and ran for the stage. I got a spot right in the front, right up against the stage, and right in front of Warren’s microphone stand.
Perfect.
The New Boyfriend put his suitcase on the floor right in front of me.
“I need to put this here”
I looked at the precious 12 inches of space that now seperated me from the stage.
“You have got to be joking”
“Oh, sorry”
He slid the suitcase over, and he stood behind it.
“Good, that’s much better”
I moved back up, and pressed myself up against the stage.
We had to wait about another hour or so before Duran came on. I don’t recall that there was an opening band. The opened with ‘Big Thing’ and I went crazy.
The New Boyfriend tried to grab my hand. I shook him off of me, and I screamed right at Simon.
Simon saw me, and winked back.
That poor boyfriend never stood a chance.
For the rest of the night I continued to stop the New Boyfriend from distracting from looking at Simon. Every time, Simon would start to look in my direction, the New Boyfriend would grab me, or try to kiss me. Sometime in the middle of the show, I smacked his hand
“Cut that out, I’m watching Duran Duran!”
“How come you’re not paying any attention to meeee?”
He was whining again, and it took ALL of my self control NOT to slap him silly.
“Are you fucking kidding me? I have got Simon LeBon in front of me, and you want my attention?”
The New Boyfriend just looked at me with sad eyes.
“If you stand on my suitcase, you might be able to see better”
I kissed him then, and I felt bad for being so mean to him.
“Thanks!”
I climbed onto his suitcase, and I stayed planted there for the rest of the show.
When the show finally ended we were some of the last people out. The only other thing I remember was that The New Boyfriend’s suitcase had a huge dent in the top of it.
“Oh man, the girl I borrowed this from is going to be mad”
“does she like Duran Duran?”
“Oh, yeah. I think she does”
“Then she will understand”
Only two months went by before I saw Duran Duran again, but by then, the New Boyfriend was history.

The Fifth One - The Beacon Theatre - 31 August, 1987

Some time during the summer of 1987, Eileen (my best friend) called and told me that Duran Duran were doing another show in New York City. This was a special, benefit performance at The Beacon Theatre. The Beacon Theatre is a fairly small venue, so Eileen and I were very excited at the prospect of seeing Duran Duran in such a cool place. This time, Eileen got the tickets and she only got tickets for the two of us.
Between "the Fourth One" (June 24, 1987) and the upcoming concert at the Beacon, I had acquired a boyfriend. While he was fairly understanding of my Duran Duran obsession, he kept hoping that I would change my mind.
The Boyfriend, Eileen and I had gotten tickets to see New Order and Echo and the Bunnymen at the Jones Beach Theatre. The day of the New Order/Echo and the Bunnymen concert dawned dark and gloomy. As the rain continued to pour down, we spent the day listening to WLIR (our local radio station) waiting to hear whether or not the concert was going to be rained out. We didn't want the concert to be rained out, because the rain date was the same day as the Duran Duran concert at the Beacon Theatre.

Around 3:00 the announcement came over the radio that the show had indeed been postponed, and would now take place on August 31. Eileen and I looked at each other, and the Boyfriend looked at me with the most adorable brown eyes you have ever seen (TRUST me, they were lethal, and probably still are)

"Does this mean that you're coming to see New Order with me?"
I stroked his cheek and said:
"Sorry, but I have to go....WE...have to go"
"But, you've seen Duran Duran so many times already"
"I know, but I know that if I don't go, I'll regret it, and I don't think I'll ever be able to say that about New Order"
The Boyfriend was a big New Order/Joy Division fan, so he gasped when I said that
(Besides, I had already seen New Order back in 1986, and while I LOVE their music, as a live show...they weren't much to see - just my opinion)

I pulled him close to me, and snuggled my head into his chest.
"I will make it up to you...I promise"
THEN, he gave me the best kiss ever.
If I stop and think about it for a minute, I'll be able to taste it

*PAUSE*

mmm...where was I?

Eileen and I went to the show, and I am SO glad that we did.
When we took our seats, placed on every seat in the theatre was a note from the charity that the concert was for. I saved mine, and I still have it.

The flyer from my seat describing the work of
The Association to Benefit Children

We had great seats in the balcony, and the set list and show were identical to the concerts we had seen at Madison Square Garden. We didn't care. It was still amazing. When Simon went into his microphone stand routine for 'Election Day' (see 'The Third One - June 23rd, 1987 - for the details) we had a great view of the whole thing. Eileen didn't care so much about THAT, but it made me really happy.
Sometime during the show, Simon announced that they had a special guest:
"Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. LOU REED!"
Eileen and I went nuts.

Lou reed walked out on stage, and we screamed even louder than we had been. We stood up and starting clapping like crazy. All the people around us seemed to have no clue that they were in the presence of a legend and an originator of so much of the music that had inspired Duran Duran in the first place.

It is FABULOUS.
Along with Simon and the rest of the band, Lou reed performed 'Sweet Jane' and 'Walk on the Wild Side'
It was an amazing experience, and I am so glad that I was there to see it.
At the time, I had no idea that Eileen and I wouldn't go to another Duran Duran concert together for 12 years.

The Eleventh One - Jones Beach Amphitheatre (15 August, 1999)

advertisement from
 the Island Ear
By the time Duran Duran had released ‘Medazzaland’ (in 1997) John Taylor had left, and of the original five, only Simon and Nick remained. Eileen (my best friend) and I had gotten back in contact with each other, so when I heard that Duran Duran was coming back to Jones beach in the summer of 1999, she was the first person I called.

“I know there’s no John Taylor for you, but come anyway. We’ll have fun”
“I don’t know. I don’t think I want to see Duran Duran without John Taylor in it”
'Let it Flow'

(front cover)
“I understand, but it’s always so nice to go to Jones Beach, and we haven’t been to a show together since 1987!”

Eileen decided to come, and also managed to convince my friend Laura (a John Taylor girl, like Eileen) to come also. When I ordered the tickets I got seats in the first section back from the orchestra. The difference in price between orchestra and the section we were in was about 25 dollars, so I didn’t get orchestra seats.
Laura had been at a family party (at Jones Beach) and she met up with me and Eileen in the parking lot.

When we got to our section, only one of the three seats was available to sit in. The seats happened to be right next to the mixing console, and there were some trunks in the other two. They appeared to be something that the road crew might be using.

They looked really heavy.

the black rectangle indicates
the location of said heavy-ass boxes
'The boxes looked REALLY heavy'

We took turns sitting in our one seat as the theatre began to fill up. We thought for certain that someone would come along and move the boxes, but no one ever did. The opening band came on, and still no one moved the boxes. By this time, all the other seats around us had filled up, and we were still short two seats. Eventually a guy came over and started opening one of the boxes. He was a short, stocky guy. He was wearing cargo shorts, combat boots, and a motorcycle jacket with no shirt underneath.
“Oh goody, are you here to move these boxes?”
asked with a smile

He glared at me.

*Cockney accent* 'NO, I'm NOT going to move those boxes. It's my gear, and it's not MY problem'

He had a thick cockney accent, and a bad attitude.
“No, I’m not gonna move these boxes. I need them to stay here”
“I paid for those seats, and I need those seats”
Eileen, Cynthia and Laura (expletives deleted)
“That’s not my problem”
Eileen started tapping my shoulder.
“What?”
I didn't mean to snap at her, but I couldn't help it.

“Come on, Let’s go tell somebody. Someone has to be able to get this guy to move his shit”

Our first step in gaining assistance was
the usher in our section. Unable to help,
He directed us to the 'Headset Lady'

I walked over to an usher, and told him the problem. 'The Usher' was just a gawky teenage kid, and he said that he didn't know how to help us.
“But, see that lady over there?”
He pointed to a woman in a Jones Beach Theatre shirt.
She had a headset on her head.
“She’s in charge of seating and stuff, maybe she can help you”

'Headset Lady' says 'Wait here for the 'Tall Guy'
and tell him that *I* told him to give you new seats'

We thanked 'The Usher' and we walked over to 'The Headset Lady'.
Next, we told 'The Headset Lady' about our problem.

“I think the best thing to do is just get you some other seats. See that tall guy over there?”
'The Headset Lady' pointed to a tall guy in a Hawaiian shirt.
“Yes”
“The Tall Guy has all the extra tickets. Go tell him your problem and tell him that I told him to give you new seats”
We thanked 'The Headset Lady', and walked over to 'The Tall Guy'

Then, we told 'The Tall Guy' about our problem.
We explained (again) about 'The Rude Roadie' and the boxes, and how he refused to move his stuff. 'The Tall Guy' rolled his eyes,
“I am so sorry. That guy is with the tour, and I assure you he doesn’t work for me. I am so sorry for the trouble, and I’m gonna give you some new seats”
'The Tall Guy' pulled out a wad of tickets from his back pocket.
“How many do you need?” he asked.
“We need three” I said.

'The Tall Guy' began to shuffle through the tickets. It seemed like he was trying to find us three seats together. Eventually he stopped shuffling and he pulled out three tickets and read them again. He muttered to himself,

'Nice Tall guy' says:
'That guy doesn't work for me,

but I am sorry he treated you that way.
Here's some
better seats'
“Nah, these aren’t good enough”

He put them back into the pile and he went back to looking through the tickets. Eileen was standing just behind 'The Tall Guy', and she was smiling. Eventually, 'The Tall Guy' came to some tickets that he liked and he handed them to me.
“Here, take these. I am so sorry, and on behalf of Jones Beach Amphitheatre I apologize for that man’s rudeness. Have a great night”

I took the tickets, and we all thanked 'The Tall Guy'.

the ticket stub from our NEW seats.
I don't thave the original one I bought from Ticketmaster.
The Tall Guy took them from us.

Next, we handed our new tickets to a nearby Usher, who said:

"Oh these are Orchestra seats, you need to go see that Usher, down there”
We thanked THAT Usher and we went down the steps to the Orchestra section. We handed our new tickets to the new Usher, and he led us to our new seats.

Eileen, Cynthia and Laura in their
NEW, BETTER seats
'Squeeeeeeee!!'

As we got closer and closer to the stage, Eileen, Laura and I just kept staring at each other and giggling.

When we got to the 10th row, the New Usher stopped.
“Here you are. Tenth row, these three seats, right in the center”

Eileen, Laura and I just squealed at each other. The stage was only about 30 feet away. I think we may have even jumped up and down with excitement.

'The Great Jones Beach Upgrade'
"All illustrated with cartoons" as
Joe Jackson would say.

Finally we had seats and we could relax. Finally, the lights went out, the butterflies in my stomach became just about unbearable, and then Duran Duran came on.

(all photos *such as they are* are property of me, and I have the neagatives to prove it)

the view from our new seats. Not too shabby, huh?

They opened with 'Girls on Film' and I couldn't help it, I just started screaming. The set was especially good because almost all of the songs had a different arrangement, and I couldn't always tell right away, what the song was. I liked that.

In fact, the whole show was full of surprises.
They even played ‘Secret Oktober’
It was a real treat to get to hear that song live, and to hear it performed in such a cool, and sexy manner.

You can view this performance here:

'Secret Oktober' Jones Beach - 1999 (via You Tube)

Another highlight was when they played ‘Out of My Mind’. I never got to see Duran Duran when they toured 'Medazzaland' so I had never heard that one live before.
You can view this performance here:

This was August of 1999, and ‘Pop Trash’ had not been released yet. Simon introduced ‘Someone Else Not Me’ as a brand new song, and it was another one of those times that I think I actually felt goose bumps. ‘Hallucinating Elvis’, ‘Lava Lamp’ and ‘Playing with Uranium’ were also excellent. ‘Playing with Uranium’ in particular was especially great.

I believe this was taken during 'Someone Else Not Me'
I remember the hairs standing up on the back of my neck, it was so great

a little SiWa action.
ALWAYS a treat.

It was a hot, muggy August night, very typical for New York in the summer. and all the guys (even Nick) were covered in sweat.

'The Controller'
aka Nick Rhodes

He threw his head back and I could see the beads of sweat
rolling down his neck. I apologize (profusely) that
my camera didn't capture that properly for you.

(of course)

Nick says goodnight to a fan and throws
some of his charm around.

Simon, I must say I DO like those pants
*raises eyebrow*
this far away shot doesn't show the really good stuff
Warren, and his washboard abs.
Even with my crummy camera
they photographed amazing well

We ended up having a much better time than we thought we were going to have. The way the evening started was so stressful and annoying.

I joked with Eileen that I should order those seats every time, and see if we could get another ‘Upgrade’

Eileen and I would go see Duran Duran one more time in 1999, and that was because I actually won tickets for a special show at the Town Hall in New York City.
That will be the Twelfth One.

The Fifteenth One - Jones Beach Amphitheater - July 31, 2005

my ticket stub

In 2005 I had already seen Duran Duran at Madison Square Garden, so when I mentioned to Don (my husband) that Eileen (my best friend) had suggested we go see them at Jones Beach I was met with the inevitable:

'Didn't you JUST see them?'

No matter how long the span between Duran Duran concerts, this is something he always wants to know.
Sometimes I have to answer:

'No, that was six YEARS ago'

THIS however was NOT one of those times.
But I told him how the show was going to be at Jones Beach and that it was on a Sunday night and that Eileen really wanted to go, and that tickets were only 40 bucks, and that even though I had just seen them in April, I was going anyway.
THIS was met with the inevitable:

'Do you have to see them every time they come to New York?'

to which I responded with the inevitable:

'Yes...yes I do'

Jones Beach Amphitheater is about a forty minute drive from my house, as opposed to the two hour train ride (in both directions) to and from New York City. Jones Beach is my preferred venue of choice in New York. Jones Beach Amphitheater is located on the Great South Bay side of the Fire Island which is a narrow stretch of beach that runs parallel to Long Island protecting it from the Atlantic Ocean. When the  breeze comes off the Ocean it carries with it the faint salty smell of the water. In mid-summer the sun doesn't completely set til at least 9:00 pm and the first two songs of the headliner's set are usually played with pink and orange puffy clouds dotting the sky as the orange sun falls into the water.

it's beautiful.

Eileen came out from Queens to attend a party at my house on the Saturday before the concert. The next day, we hung out at my friend Melissa's house and played in the pool with the Don and the kids. After a quick, easy dinner of party left-overs, Eileen and I left for the show.

Jones Beach Amphiteater

Amazingly there was no traffic as Eileen and I made our way to Jones Beach.
We got a great parking spot, and we walked ALL the way up to the new section of Jones Beach, and we took our seats.
This set was slightly different than the one they had played at Madison Square Garden back in April. When they played 'Sound of Thunder', I freaked.

I remember that 'What Happens Tomorrow' was a particularly great. Simon seemed so happy to have John Taylor back on stage with him and it came through in his performance. Another hi-light was 'Come Up and See Me (Make Me Smile)' nobody plays the guitar solo on that like Andy Taylor.

NOBODY.

They played so many great songs that night. So many songs from all over their career and that's what made it so memorable. Especially for a pair of best friends who one day in 1983 simultaneously discovered Duran Duran.
I have been to a LOT of Duran Duran concerts, and I have been to a lot of them with all different people. But there is something about seeing them with Eileen that is the best experience of all. As I was thinking about that, and enjoying the perfect summer evening, they played 'Nice'
Part of the chorus goes like this:

'There is nothing better
Than being with you
And I'm feeling so nice
There is nowhere better
Than here with you
And it's feeling so nice'

I realized at that moment that no one else understands how much Duran Duran means to me than Eileen does. No one knows how the songs have made me cry and changed my life more than she does. So I reached over and gave her a great, big hug.

'What was THAT for?' she laughed.
'That was to thank you for being the only one who gets it, and to say thanks for wanting to come here tonight because there really is nothing better than being here with you'

She hugged me back and said 'You're the only one who gets it, for me too'

We danced and hugged and cried and jumped with joy for the rest of the evening.

Eileen has always been like a sister to me and as long as we still have Duran Duran in common, I imagine us going to see them for as long as they want to keep going out there.
And it will always be so 'Nice'

The Fourth One - Madison Square Garden June 24, 1987

  • The return of Duran Duran to New York City had sold out in 2 hours and a second show was added. It was such a great feeling because so many people had predicted that Duran Duran were finished, and that they would never regain the ground they had lost.
I was living at F.I.T. The Fashion Institute of Technology) at the time, so I walked up to Madison Square Garden (MSG) to buy the tickets. There was no one else on line and I was worried at first that I was too late.
”How many do you need?” the cashier asked
”I could use 6, that would be great”
”Well, I don’t have that many together, but I see I can get you four seats on the floor”
    I didn’t think twice.
    ”I’ll take them!”
Back then the sections of MSG were about 10 rows each. The seats I got were in section J, row 9 which put us on the floor, but at the back. The cashier told me that the seats should be pretty good because our chairs would be on a riser and that we should be able to see over the heads of the people in front of us.

As the concerts approached Eileen realized that she wouldn't be able to go the second show. She was going to Queens College at the time and she had class the same night as the second concert.

There was a LOT of drama of trying to find someone to take her ticket. I had a friends who was going and she was currently in a 'fight' with the one other person I knew who would be interested. They BOTH said they wouldn't go if the other one was going and.....Oh forget it.
You know how teenage girls are, I don’t really feel like explaining it.

I was staying at Eileen's house in Queens that week, and it was awkward when it was time for me to leave for the show. I
felt so guilty because I was going and she wasn't. I took the subway and met the rest of my friends at Penn Station.

Our seats were very good (though not nearly as good as they had been the night before) and we could see everything very well.
Up until 'Election Day' that is. THIS time I knew what to expect, and it drove me crazy that I couldn't see Simon on the ground with his microphone stand.
The show was amazing. From what I remember the set list was the same:
    A View To A Kill
    Notorious
    American Science
    Union of the Snake
    Vertigo -
My personal favorite from the album, and KILLER when performed live
    New Religion
    Meet El Presidente
    Election Day -
I was so annoyed that I couldn't see Simon on the floor
    Some Like It Hot
    A Matter Of Feeling
    The Chauffeur
    Save A Prayer -
This was done acoustically, and it was beautiful
    Skin Trade -
Simon was the most smoking hot and sexy for this song. Holy crap, it was LeHotness.
    Hold Me
Is There Something I Should Know?
    Hungry Like The Wolf -
This was a 'funked' up version of the old classic. It was awesome!
    encore
    The Wild Boys -
John came out by himself and started to play, then Nick came out, and finally Simon started singing, as he was projected on the the 20 sets of televisions overhead.
The Reflex - I have NO memory of this song being performed what-so-ever.

    My 'Strange Behaviour Tour' program

For SOME reason, I did not have a camera for the second show, so I didn't have any pictures from that night....until 1990.
I have a friend named Jill who had been a Duranie (before she went 'Goth') and her mom was cleaning out her room. Jill's mom called and asked me if I wanted any of Jill's Duran Duran stuff. I told her I would take it and I drove over to her house to pick it up.
I ended up getting another Sing Blue Silver tour program, another copy of 'The Book of Words' and a pack of pictures from Duran Duran at Madison Square Garden in 1987. It turned out that a friend of Jill's had gone to see Duran Duran that night. She was in the second row (probably in my exact seat from the night before) and she took some excellent pictures.
    Here they are:

    'Election Day'
You know it's a good thing I WASN'T in the second this time,
     I don't think I would have survived.

'Election Day' Simon LeBon......in the zone.

Look at those arms. The long arms of LeBon.

John Taylor making the 'Bass Face'

His arms were way too skinny, but LOOK at that smile.
    NICE!

It was another fabulous night. The only thing that would have made it better would have been sharing it with Eileen.

Duran Duran came back to New York city one more time that summer, and Eileen and I were BOTH there.

That will be 'The Fifth One'
